When we designed the Modusware Puffer, we didn't compromise on protection. We chose NIJ Level IIIA—the highest level of soft body armor available—because founders deserve the best protection that can still be worn comfortably every day.
Understanding NIJ Standards
The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is the research and development agency of the U.S. Department of Justice. They establish the standards that all body armor must meet. These aren't marketing claims—they're rigorous, scientifically-validated benchmarks.
The Protection Levels
- Level IIA: Stops 9mm, .40 S&W. Lightest, but limited protection.
- Level II: Stops 9mm, .357 Magnum. Common for concealed wear.
- Level IIIA: Stops .357 SIG, .44 Magnum. Maximum soft armor protection.
- Level III+: Rifle protection. Requires hard plates. Not wearable daily.
Why IIIA is the Sweet Spot
Level IIIA represents the optimal balance between protection and practicality. It stops virtually all handgun threats—which account for the vast majority of firearm violence—while remaining soft and flexible enough to wear under or as regular clothing.
"IIIA stops a .44 Magnum—one of the most powerful handgun rounds in existence. If you're protected against that, you're protected against almost any handgun scenario."
The Technology Inside
Our panels use advanced aramid fiber composites—the same family of materials as Kevlar—woven in a proprietary pattern that distributes impact energy across the largest possible surface area. The result:
- 40% lighter than traditional body armor
- Flexible enough to conform to body movement
- Thin profile that doesn't add bulk
- NIJ certified with independent lab verification
What IIIA Stops
Every Modusware Puffer is tested to stop:
- 9mm FMJ at 1,400 ft/s
- .40 S&W at 1,155 ft/s
- .357 SIG at 1,470 ft/s
- .44 Magnum at 1,430 ft/s
These aren't edge cases. These are the rounds that represent 99% of real-world handgun threats.
The Wearability Factor
Protection means nothing if you don't actually wear it. That's why we obsessed over weight, flexibility, and thermal regulation. The result is armor that weighs less than your laptop and moves with you through your day—from the morning commute to the investor dinner.
